The Alexander Calder Shadows Project was the imagination of Adam Lindemann and the
Calder Foundation to consider the effect of Calder’s work through light and shadow.
Our work on this project was one of the most challenging as we had to consider the locations for the shadows to land,
which meant working through where the light source could mount - often on or close to the floor.
The effect was simply breathtaking. Part of our expertise is often illuminating artwork. We don’t make such a concerned effort to consider the shadows, as many pieces are hanging on walls, or sculptures in the middle of a room. In this project, lighting the art was secondary. It was considered only for the inclusion of the entire rotating pattern for the shadow. This project opens the door for Calder devotees to evaluate the cause and effect of his mobiles.
